Heating current measuring is an important addition to the controller's function range.

  • It shows, independent of the number of phases, the current presently flowing through the heater.

  • It provides information on the heater's condition (total failure, partial failure with parallel connection of heaters) and monitors current data considering a tolerance band.

  • It monitors the status of the power controllers and signals an alarm when heating controllers are permanently switched on (e.g. alloyed SSRs, contactor ‘sticks’), which can cause damage due to overheating.

  • It supports a number of controller functions. Bad adjustments of control parameters, for example, can be avoided because the identification function (auto tuning) is only started if a corresponding heating current is recognised in the control zone, i.e. when it is certain that the zone is ready for heating. Otherwise, the start of the identification function is delayed until a heating current is detected. Hence, a wrongful adaptation is prevented without user input or additional software.

Every PSG controller, respectively every PSG control system is prepared for heating current measuring. The heating current is measured over so-called current transformer modules that are available in different variants. Depending on the controller or control system these are available in two variants.

Measuring method

Individual current measurement

Each zone has its own measuring input for heating current measurement, the feed line for heating a single zone is routed through a current transformer. This measuring method is used for dynamic control processes, such as the control of hot runners.

Summation current measurement

The control lines for the heaters of several zones are run through a current transformer. This function is run through the controller software or via the IO group through direct control of the outputs. This measuring method is used for non-dynamic control processes, for example for temperature control of extruders.

Compensation of power grid interference

In order to reduce the impact of mains voltage fluctuations on the measured heating current, modules to measure the mains voltage are available that calculate a mathematical correction of heating current.
